Devlog 22 - Meet the Nutcracker Legion

Summary

This feels like a major milestone for Jackstrap.

Jackstrap is a hand-drawn arena survival game where Jack protects the Family Jewels. The player controls movement and positioning while attacks are structured through a combo system.

This feels like the point where the enemy side of Jackstrap finally clicked.

I think I finally found the right core enemy for the game: the Nutcracker.

It fits the joke, the theme, and the objective almost too perfectly.

What changed?

  • Locked in a much clearer enemy direction for Jackstrap.

  • The main enemy is now the Nutcracker doll:

    • small
    • fast
    • stiff
    • mechanical
    • built around a big snapping jaw
  • Started defining the Nutcracker's core visual features:

    • big mouth
    • tall hat
    • large mustache
  • Made early enemy animations:

    • idle
    • run
  • The run animation is very simple, but already has some personality.

  • Continued refining Jack's punch animations, especially the difference between the jab and the hook.

  • Wrote a one-page summary of the game to clarify:

    • the premise
    • the objective
    • the combat structure
    • the enemy faction
    • the overall tone

What I'm unsure about?

  • I am thinking about whether the Family Jewels should become a stronger defendable objective during a run.
  • That could push the game a little more toward base defense.
  • I am not convinced yet, because it might make the player stay too still and reduce movement around the arena.

Open questions

  • How much should the Family Jewels shape moment-to-moment gameplay?
  • Should the game stay closer to an arena survivor format, or lean further into defense?
  • How exaggerated should the Nutcracker design become, especially the mouth and bite?
  • What kind of sound design best sells the nutcracker theme?

Next steps

  • Continue enemy art.
  • Make an enemy model sheet.
  • Add more information to the attack table.
  • Review the current game direction notes.
  • Integrate the new attack timing assets.
