Devlog 34 - Finding the Hook

Summary

I have been rewriting the pitch because the mechanic was still taking too many words to explain. The useful breakthrough was separating planning from execution.

You compose combat ahead of time, then make that composition work in real-time combat.

That is the hook I want the game and the trailer to communicate.

What changed?

There are really two kinds of player agency:

  • Composition / planning: which attacks and movement actions do I buy, which ones go in the combo, and in what order?
  • Execution / tactics: where am I standing, which direction am I aiming, when do I commit, and how do I adapt while the sequence runs?

The working pitch is now roughly:

Jackstrap is an arena survivor about protecting the Family Jewels from an army of Nutcrackers. Build and customize a combo from attacks and moves, then direct Jack as the fight gets harder.

I also restarted the trailer structure because the previous version had become too messy to judge from a distance. The new architecture is deliberately simple:

PREMISE -> USP -> ESCALATION -> PAYOFF

Or, less politely:

WHAT THE HELL IS THIS? -> BUILD A COMBO / FIGHT WITH IT -> MORE OPTIONS + HARDER FIGHTS -> RIDICULOUS FINAL COMBO

The opening is now being broken down separately: quick chaos, Jack, enemies, an actual fight, the premise/joke card, then the mechanic.

I also started formalizing the glossary so words like Attack, Move, Combo, Gem, and Upgrade stop drifting between different meanings.

What I'm unsure about?

The wording is still working copy. The mechanic feels clearer than it did a week ago, but I am not treating the current elevator pitch as final marketing text yet.

Next steps

  • Finish the HUD portion of the UI POC.
  • Build the Upgrade Selection and Combo Composer screens.
  • Keep turning the trailer architecture into actual scenes.
